James Wimberg

In the artist’s own words: “Shooting film with a toy camera (which has a plastic lens) was liberating from a technical standpoint. I knew trying to get sharp focus images of the artwork would be impossible. This camera is known for soft-focus, dreamlike images with many technical flaws that actually add to the “look” of the film, giving the images a special personality. In order to add another level of interest, I chose to double expose each frame causing the images to have a layered quality – forcing further abstraction and depth. When exposing the second image to overlay the first in each frame, I only have a vague idea of what was just recorded. This technique adds a large element of chance to each photograph and the results are fascinating.”
