Shelley Heffler (paintings)

In the artist’s own words: “I paint topographies that lead the viewer on a path beyond maps, grids, and lines, into an unknowable geography where surface, strata, and landforms evoke a sense of an imaginary place. Over the past ten years I have produced several portfolios that combine cartography with abstraction by layering scrapes of maps, discarded paint skins and fabric with paint on canvas. I find inspiration in modern transit systems and ancient ruins, Google satellite images and Thomas guide maps. I’ve learned to manipulate fast drying acrylic to provide the same effects as glazing and over-lay found in oils to produce works that are reminiscent of complex, layered geological sites.”
